I realized I had to do something about my old WordPress blog, especially after the recent #wpdrama. Even though I hadn’t touched it in many years, I was a bit embarrassed that it was still on WordPress. The site somehow still attracts a couple of thousand unique daily visitors, so I didn’t want to just shut it down.
This afternoon’s hobby project was to convert my blog into a static site using Hugo. Luckily, I came across wp2hugo, which was super easy to use and worked amazingly well. All media, YouTube, and GitHub Gist embeds simply worked. There might, of course, be stuff that doesn’t work as expected, but I haven’t seen anything yet. With zero tinkering, I consider this a success.
My WordPress installation is now turned off, and the static pages generated by Hugo are served by Cloudflare Pages.
Comments are missing, but I might spin up Remark42 (it has a migration tool). Let’s see.
